Near the start of the first episode of The Rings of Power, a young Galadriel asks her brother Finrod how one would be able to determine which is the true light that she should follow. She says that the light reflected in water often shines as bright as the light in the sky and asks how to tell them apart. Finrod whispers something to her, and she says his response is too simple. The phrase that he whispers isn’t revealed till the end of the episode, but he says: “Sometimes we cannot know until we have touched the darkness.” The phrase is indeed simple, and it just implies that sometimes we have to go through hardships or at least experience the “dark” or wrong path before we’re finally able to determine what’s right and what’s wrong.
